How to Sew a Wine Bottle Gift Bag with Pocket | Easy DIY Tutorial

Last Christmas, I made several decorative wine bottle bags as gifts for my friends. To my surprise, everyone was more enchanted by the gift bag than the bottle of wine itself! That’s when the idea came to me. Why not create a sewing tutorial so you, too, can make these beautiful wine bottle gift bags? Trust me, these will leave a lasting impression when you give them away!

What Fabric to Use?

What Fabric Should You Use?

Making wine bottle gift bags is a simple and enjoyable process. For me, the hardest part is choosing the patterns and colors for the fabric because I have so many beautiful options in my collection. If you’re anything like me—a bit obsessed with buying fabric—you’ll know exactly what I mean!

Here are my go-to fabrics for these gorgeous gift bags:

  • For bags without lining: Canvas cotton is my favorite since it’s thicker and provides great stability.
  • For lined or reversible bags: I love using cotton or polyester fabrics.

Would you like to Personalize Your Wine Bottle Gift bags?

If you want to personalize the bags with techniques like heat transfer vinyl, iron-on designs, appliqué, or screen printing, I recommend using solid-colored fabrics for the best results. For sublimation, it’s essential to use fabrics with at least 75% polyester in solid, light colors. Would you like to learn more about the customization methods I mentioned? If you prefer your bags without personalization, go for patterned fabrics. I love combining two or three different colors or prints to make each bag unique and eye-catching.

Step 2: Assemble the Pocket

Sew allowance for the entire project: 1/4″

Grab the two pieces of fabric that measure 7″ by 6″. Place them one on top of the other with the right side inside. Measure 3 inches from the bottom to the top and draw a line from there to the opposite top corner.

Cut and sew only on that side leaving a 1/4″ allowance. Turn inside out and iron.

Turn right side over, fold in half so there is a fringe above the seam, and iron.

Lay the two pieces on top of each other, align and cut a 1 1/4″ square in each bottom corner.

Time to place the pocket. We will place this 3″ above the cut corners. Pass seam, lift it up, line it up and secure with pins.

Unfold, place and align the two pieces leaving the right side inside. Secure with pins. Mark two 3/4″ spaces 3″ down the main fabric. This to insert the ribbon. Mark a 4 or 5″ space on the lining. This will be used to turn it inside out. Sew all the way around except for marked corners and spaces.

Now, sew the corner.

Turn it inside out, sew the lining opening and insert the lining inside the bag, accommodating the corners well.

Pass two seams leaving the openings that we left above to insert the ribbon in the center.

Step 4: insert the Ribbon

Using a cloth pin, insert the tie strip into one of the openings above.
