Have you decided to enter in to the sublimation world? Are you researching which printer is right for you? What Printers Can You Convert for Sublimation?

Let’s first talk about the printers you can convert for sublimation. The printers that you can convert are those that DO NOT use heat when printing. That is, those who use PIEZO technology.

For example, CANON or HP printers use heat technology when printing so they could not be used for sublimation. Brother printers use PIEZO technology, but it is sometimes difficult to find compatible sublimation ink for these printers.

Fortunately, EPSON EcoTank printers can be converted into sublimation printers as they use PIEZO technology when printing. Another advantage is that there are many places where you can find compatible sublimation ink for these printers. From the most economical to the most sophisticated, here is the list of some of the EPSON EcoTank printers that you could choose to convert: ET-2720, ET-2750, ET-2760, ET-2800, ET-2830, ET-2850, ET-3710, ET-3760, ET-3850, ET-4800, ET-8500, ET-8550, and ET-15000.

Printing Sizes

These EPSON EcoTank ET-2720, ET-2750, ET-2760, ET-2800, ET-2830, ET-2850, ET-3710, ET-3760, ET-3850, ET-4800 and ET-8500 printers print in size 8.5 “by 11” letter and some up to legal size.

The advantage of the EPSON EcoTank ET-8550 and ET-15000 is that they are wide format and print in letter, legal, 11 “by 17” and 13 “by 19” sizes.

Among this extensive list, you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

I have already converted two printers for sublimation. An ET-2720 printer that is the cheapest on the market for its price of $ 199.00 and an ET-3760 and both have worked perfectly for me. These two prints 8.5 “by 11” letter size. With the ET-3760 I have printed up to a legal size of 8.5 by 11 “.

Today I am going to convert an EPSON EcoTank ET-15000 into a sublimation printer as this printer offers me larger prints than the previous two. Prints letter size 8.5 “by 11”, legal 8.5 by 11 “, 11” by 17 “and 13” by 19 “

What Ink Should We Use for Sublimation?

Before converting and configuring the printer, I want to emphasize something very important. The ink that comes in the box of the EPSON EcoTank printer IS NOT FOR SUBLIMATION so WE MUST NOT USE IT. You can toss it away, save it for a regular printer, or you can even sell it. But you should not use it.

To sublimate we must use special ink for sublimation. It is very important to choose high quality sublimation ink for a vivid and brilliant print. I use Hiipoo brand sublimation ink and am very satisfied with its quality. Hiipoo brand ink comes in two types. One package that comes with bottles for filling with syringes and the other that comes with bottles for easy filling. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

In addition, they offer a package with bottles in black. Since, in general, the black color is the one that wears out faster than the other colors.

What Paper Should We use for Sublimation?

As well as the ink, we must also use special paper for sublimation that is of very good quality. I use A-SUB brand sublimation paper and I am very happy with its quality and price. A-SUB paper does not leave wheel marks after printing, dries fast and its perfect for soft surfaces like polyester fabrics and hard surfaces like ceramic and wood.

A-SUB comes in these different sizes: 8.5 “by 11” letter, 8.5 by 14 “legal, 11” by 17 “, and 13” by 19 “

Step 2: Fill Up the Tanks

It is time to fill up the tanks using special sublimation ink.

As I mentioned above, do not use the ink that comes with the printer as that is not sublimation ink.

I am going to use the easy fill bottles. If you would like to use the syringes, HERE is the tutorial on how to do that process. When filling the tanks, it is very necessary to keep an order of colors. Black ink goes first, cyan second, magenta third, and yellow last. Well, that will depend on the printer model. For some printers the order may vary.

Sublimation: Convert EPSON EcoTank ET-15000 into Sublimation Printer:

I’m going to start with the black ink, put the bottle in the nozzle of the tank, press a little and let it fill by itself. Once the tank is full, remove the bottle and do the same with the remaining colors.

Always in the order mentioned above. You may have ink left in the bottles. Save it as when configuring the printer, the ink levels will drop a bit and you can continue to fill them up later.

Step 3: Printer Setup and Alignment

Using the power cord that comes with the printer, connect the printer to the power and press the power button. Then it will tell you to select your language, city, date and time.

When the start here message appears, press the help button for five seconds.

When the ink fill confirmation message appears, press done or finished to start the ink filling in the printer. This process will take approximately 10 minutes. After this process, the ink levels will drop a bit. If you wish, you can continue filling by following the same process that we did when filling the tanks.

Once you have finished press continue with the adjustments and follow the instructions on the screen as now it is time to align and adjust the printer.

First, we are going to put regular printing paper in the bottom cassette of the printer. This paper will only be for the lineup. After finishing this process, we are going to load the printer with special paper for sublimation.

Following the instructions on the screen, it will print 5 pages to guide us with alignment and adjustment. For example, in printing number one it will tell us to select the option that it printed for us. If you got continuous or intermittent lines, press that option on the screen and continue with the next alignment prints.

Step 4: Connect the Printer to the Computer

Go to this link https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/ET-Series/Epson-ET-15000/s/SPT_C11CH96201

Install the program to the computer and follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 5: Connect the WIFI

Now we are going to select the connection either WIFI or via USB. If you will make the connection via USB you will need to obtain a USB cable since that does not come with the printer. I will select WIFI. Press next. This process will take approximately 10 minutes.

Step 6: Charging the Printer with Sublimation Paper

As I mentioned at the beginning, to sublimate we must use special paper for sublimation and that it is of very good quality. I use A-SUB brand sublimation paper and I am very happy with its quality and price. A-SUB paper does not leave wheel marks after printing, dries extremely fast, has fast transfer properties, perfect for soft surfaces like polyester fabrics and hard surfaces like ceramic and wood.

A-SUB comes in these different sizes: 8.5 “by 11” letter, 8.5 by 14 “legal, 11” by 17 “, and 13” by 19 “

Asub sublimation ink.

If you are going to use letter-size paper, you can put it in the bottom cassette of the printer and it should go with the printable side facing down. If it is from the sub brand with the letters facing up.

For the other legal sizes of 8.5 by 14 “, 11” by 17 “and 13” by 19 “you must put them on the back of the printer and you must put it with the printable part in front. That is, with the letters facing backwards.

Step 7: Printing Preferences

In the browser of your computer look for the folder printers and scanners and open it.

Select the sublimation printer and press manage.

Click on printing preferences.

It will open this window. In paper source – select the one that you are going to use the most. It can be cassette, paper tray or auto select. In document size select the one that you will be using the most. I will leave it in letter size. In orientation I will leave it portrait. In paper type select premium presentation paper matte. In quality select high. Select print preview. Then press more options.

Here it is very important to select mirror mode – mirror image and press ok. For sublimation we must always print in mirror mode most of all when we are printing text.

We already have the default printing preferences. In this way, we no longer have to be doing it every time we print a design for sublimation.

The printer is now ready to start printing sublimation designs. You can use the program you want to print your images. I like to use Inkscape’s free graphic design program. Press HERE to see the tutorial on how to print images for sublimation using this program. Download the program here.
