What makes this method so special?
What makes this technique of applying foil with an inkjet printer special is its accessibility and versatility. Unlike other methods that require specialized equipment such as DTF printers, sublimation printers, or an Iron-On cutting machine, this option allows anyone with a regular inkjet printer to create brilliant, high-quality foil designs at home.
The ability to professionally personalize your clothing and accessories without large investments or additional equipment is a big draw. The metallic finish of the foil gives a touch of luxury and sophistication to any project. In addition, the process is simple and you can obtain impressive results in a short time, which makes it an ideal technique for creators and entrepreneurs looking to stand out with unique designs!
Necessary Materials
So that you can replicate this technique successfully, here is the list of materials:
- FREE designs on my blog: t-shirt designs
- Inkjet printer: You can use any standard inkjet printer, such as Canon Pixma Mega Tank. This is the one I used for my tests.
- Film DTF con foil (I used gold color, but there are more shades available)
- DTF Powder You can use the brand of your preference. I am using the brand Yamation.
- Oven to cure designs (I use my Procolored Oven for DTF) If you don’t have an oven, you can use your heat press.
- To print the designs on the garments, we are going to need a thermal press. For this project I used my Vevor 15″x15″ Thermal Press, which is perfect for customization work. Find out more about this press here
- Lint remover roller to clean the area where we are going to press the design.
- Teflon sheets (Or you can also use Parchment paper)
- Heat Tape

Step by Step to Apply Foil to T-Shirts or Garments
1. Print the Design
The first step is to choose a simple design with a transparent background. It is recommended that the designs be single layer and be in PNG or SVG format. I used the program Inkscape, which is free and very complete. If you don’t know how to use Inkscape, I invite you to watch my tutorials on my YouTube channel.
- Remember that to print it on foil, you must rotate the design in mirror mode. This is crucial for the design to go in the right direction.
- Once you have your design, import it into Inkscape and set it to letter size or whatever size fits your print.

2. Prepare the Design for Print
Before printing, make sure you select the correct settings on your printer.
- Select photo paper, semi-gloss and select high quality to ensure a sharp print.
- Place the foil with the white side facing up in your printer tray, and then print the design. If you are going to place the foil in the cassette, with the printable side facing down.

3. Apply DTF Powder
After printing the design, place the paper in a container and cover the design with DTF powder. Make sure the design is well covered and remove excess dust. Then, place the design in a DTF oven at 120°C (250°F) for 80 seconds. If you don’t have a DTF oven, you can also use a heat press, such as the Vevor press.

4. Transfer the Foil
Once the design has gone through the curing process, transfer it to the garment of your choice (this can be a t-shirt, bag, etc.). Place the design on the fabric and cover it with the butcher paper to protect the foil. Then, press at 320°F for 20 seconds.
- Important: Let the design cool before developing it. This will help you get a flawless finish.
- After removing the film, place a piece of parchment paper on top and press again but this time only for 10 seconds.

5. Cleaning Excess Foil
Once the design has cooled, use a lint remover roller to remove excess foil around the design. This will leave a clean and professional finish.

6. Comparison of Results
It is interesting to see how the foil applied with inkjet printer It is compared to sublimation and DTF techniques. After doing some washing tests, I can say that:
The foil applied with inkjet printer It held up very well after several washes on dark fabrics, although special care must be taken on white fabrics.
The technique DTF is ideal for greater durability and resistance, but this technique with inkjet printer It is an excellent alternative if you do not have sublimation or DTF equipment.

Conclusion
This technique of applying foil with an inkjet printer is an excellent option for those looking to personalize their clothing and accessories without the need for expensive equipment such as a DTF or a sublimation printer. Plus, the process is relatively simple and inexpensive, and the results are amazing!
