DIY Decorative Garden Flags {{Step by Step Guide}}
Learn how to make your own Custom Garden Flags to customize with the technique of your choice.
Decorative garden flags are beautiful and perfect to enhance the exterior decoration of your home in all seasons of the year, holidays and special occasions.

I am going to share with you the tutorial of how to sew 5 different styles of garden flags. From the simplest to the most elaborated.

There are tons of places where you can buy them already made in blank or customized. Personally, I like to make my own decorative garden flags so I can use my favorite fabric and colors and to give them the style and unique touch that I love.
You are going to learn how to make a garden flags in less than 5 MINUTES. Then you can customize it using the method of your preference.
What Type of fabric will you need?
First let’s plan how we will customize it. If you wish to sublimate it, you will need polyester fabric. My favorite is blackout decor in polyester. If you wish to use any other customization method, you may use cotton, cotton canva, denim or the fabric of your liking.
What size are the garden flags?
Normally, garden flags measure 12.5″ by 18″.

How to customize it after sewing it?
You can use sublimation, Iron on vinyl, transfer, screen printing, embroidery, appliqué and more. Check out my Youtube channel to explore video tutorials of how to customize using some of these methods.
Where to display your garden flags?
You may display it in your garden, your porch, driveway, flower beds, doors, wall, patio, etc.

When to display your garden flags?
You can display your garden flag all year long if you wish! You can use them for birthdays, weddings, seasons of the year, holidays, as a welcome sign, etc.

What will you need to to sew your own garden flags?

Tape measure- Inches and centimeters
Washable Pencil or fabric marker
Garden flag holders: any of these:
Sewing Garden flag #1
This one is the basic style of garden flag and very easy to sew for beginners.

Measurements:
1 Piece of FABRIC Inches: 12 1/2 “by 21 1/2” Centimeters: 31.5 by 55 cm
For this first garden flag, I am using blackout decor fabric in polyester. It will be perfect for sublimation or any other customization technique. Check out my Youtube channel to explore the video tutorials on how to do sublimation.

Instructions:
- Grab the fabric and make folds on the top and bottom. HEMS – Inches: Top 2 1/2 “Bottom 1” Centimeters: 6.5 by 2.5 cm
- Iron, secure it with pins and
- Sew leaving 2″ seam allowance on the top and 1″ on the bottom.
And Ready!!! As I stated before this one is very easy to sew. You may also sew a hem on the sides if you wish. Just remember to add extra fabric.

Now you may customize it. And, you can use the method of your choice. This garden flag was made out of polyester fabric you can sublimate it if you wish.
Sewing Garden flag #2
The second garden flag will be very easy to make. It will be sewn in cotton canva fabric in two colors.

Measurements:
1 Piece of FABRIC Inches: 15″ by 13 1/2″ Centimeters: 38 por 34.5 cm
2 Pieces of FABRIC Inches: 5″ x 13 1/2″ Centimeters: 13″ por 34.5 cm

Instructions:
- Place the 2 pieces of fabric that measure 5″ by 13 1/2″ and place them on top of the bigger piece of fabric. One on the top and one on the bottom.
- Secure them with pins.
- Sew leaving 1/4″ seam allowance.
- Fold the sides by 1/2″ and sew leaving 1/4″ seam allowance.
- Fold the top and bottom to the back by 2 1/4″. [Flag should measure 12.5″ by 18″ ]
- Iron, secure it with pins and sew leaving 2″ seam allowance.




Here is the second garden flag.
Now you may customize it using your preffered method.

Sewing Garden flag #3
The third garden flag will be reversible and will be sewn with two types of fabric. Cotton Canva and polyester. Yay!! I can customize both sides.

Measurements:
1 Piece of FABRIC Inches: 10″ by 11″ Centímeters: 25.5 by 28 cm [Solid color]
2 Pieces of FABRIC Inches: 13.5″ x 21 1/2″ CentImeters: 34.5″ x 54.5 cm

I will be using blackout decor in polyester.
This DIY garden flag will be perfect for sublimation!!!

Instructions:
- Place the two big pieces of fabric together, align them, and secure with pins or clips.
- Mark a 7″ gap on the top. [To turn inside out when finish sewing.]
- Sew around leaving 1/2″ seam allowance. [Remember to leave the 7 inches gap].
- Turn inside out, strengthen, define the corner using a ruler, fold the edges on the gap and iron it.
- Fold the top to the back by 2 1/2″ and Iron it.
- Sew leaving 2″ seam allowance.
- Grab the last piece of fabric and fold it. [1/2″ on the 4 sides and iron it].
- Place it on top of the garden flag, secure it with pins, and
- Sew around leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance.









Voila!!! Here is the third style of garden flag.
I love this style since it is reversible, I can customize both sides.
Since the solid fabric is polyester, I can sublimate it.

Sewing Garden flag #4
The next garden flag will be reversible and will be sewn with solid and patterned fabric. I love these reversible DIY garden flags. I can customize both sides.

Measurements:
INCHES:
1 Piece of fabric in solid color: 13.5″ by 22″
1 Piece of fabric in solid color: 11″ by 15″
1 Piece of fabric with pattern: 3″ by 13 1/2″
1 Piece of fabric with pattern: 5″ by 13 1/2″
2 Pieces of fabric with pattern: 2″ by 15″
CENTIMETERS:
1 Piece of fabric in solid color: 34.5 by 56 cm
1 Piece of fabric in solid color: 28 by 38 cm
1 Piece of fabric with pattern: 7.5 by 34.5 cm
1 Piece of fabric with pattern: 13 by 34.5cm
2 Pieces of fabric with pattern: 5 by 38.5 cm

Instructions:
- First, grab the piece of fabric that measures 11″ by 15″ and place the 2 pieces that measure 2″ by 15″ on top. Align them on the sides and sew leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Iron it. Grab the other two pieces of fabric that measure 3″ and 5″ by 13 1/2″. Place one on top and the other one on the bottom. Align and sew leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Iron it. Place the last piece of fabric on top, align, secure it with pins, and,
- We are going to mark a 7″ gap on the top to turn inside out. [when finish sewing].
- Sew leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Turn inside out, fold the edges on the gap and iron.
- Fold the top to the back by 2 1/2″. First make sure it measure 18″ from bottom to top.
- Sew, leaving 2″ seam allowance.









And ready!!! yay!

Sewing Garden flag #5
I am going to add ruffles on the top and bottom as an extra design. This DIY flag will also be reversible. This one can be sewn with polyester, cotton or cotton canva. You can make your own ruffled ribbon or can buy it if you wish. I will show you to to make ruffle ribbon.

Measurements:
1] Piece of fabric in solid color: 13 1/2” x 15”
1] Piece of fabric in solid color: 13 1/2” x 21”
1] Piece of fabric with pattern: 4” x 40” to make ruffle ribbon.
2] Pieces of fabric with pattern: 5” x 13 1/2”
OPTIONAL:
1] 13 1/2” pleated or ruched ribbon [If you wish you can make your own]

Instructions:
- Get the piece of fabric that measures 4″ by 40″. Fold it in half and iron it.
- Make pleats and secure them with pins. [1/2″ each approximately] Sew leaving 1/4″ seam allowance.
- Place it on top of the piece of fabric that measures 15″ by 13 1/2″. Secure it with pins.
- OPTIONAL: Place a 13 1/2″ ruffled or ruched ribbon on the bottom and secure it with pins.
- Grab the two pieces of fabric that measure 5″ by 13.5″ and place-align one on the top and one on the bottom. Secure it with pins. [Remove the pins from the middle layer is you need to]
- Sew top and bottom leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Iron it.
- Place the last piece of fabric on top of it. Secure it with pins.
- Mark a 7″ gap on the top. [to turn inside out when finish sewing]
- Now align the two bottom stitches, secure the sides with pins and sew leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Measure 18″ from the bottom to the top and fold the excess to the back and ron it.
- Lift and fold the ruffle to the top and secure it with pins. [To leave a hidden stitch]
- Sew leaving 2″ seam allowance.
- Place the ruffle back down.














Voila!!!
The last garden flag is ready to be customized.
