Unboxing & First Impressions
The Clawlab Tufting Gun comes in a long, complete package. It includes:
- The tufting gun in a beautiful, practical case
- A set of 10 yarn rolls (see the yarn I used here)
- Non-slip fabric for the back of your rug
- Special tufting mesh
- A frame for mounting the mesh
- A detailed instruction manual
Opening the box was exciting! I loved that the tufting gun is lightweight, easy to handle, and comes with its charger. Everything felt high-quality and ready for a beginner like me.

Assembling the Frame & Preparing the Mesh
Assembling the frame was straightforward following the instructions. Once it was ready, I used a rod to secure the top of the mesh and made sure to stretch it tightly across the frame. This is essential because if the fabric is loose, the stitches may break or not form properly.

For those who don’t have a projector like me, here’s a tip: print your design on several sheets, tape them together, and trace it onto the mesh. I used Google Sheets to automatically split the design across multiple pages, which made it easy to piece together like a puzzle.

Threading the Yarn & Practice Stitches
Next, I threaded the yarn into the gun. There’s a small piece at the top of the needle that you can install to help guide the thread—super easy! Before starting the final project, I practiced on the bottom of the mesh to get comfortable.
As a beginner, I made mistakes at first, but that’s part of the learning process. Once I got the hang of it, my stitches improved, and I felt more confident moving forward.

Creating My First Tufting Project
With my yarn ready, I began stitching along my traced design. I’ll be honest—my first stitches weren’t perfect. But with practice, I started finding the rhythm, and it was incredibly satisfying to see the design take shape.

What I love about the Clawlab Tufting Gun is how versatile it is. You can make:
- Custom rugs
- Wall decorations
- Desk mats for keyboards and mice
- Kids’ room décor
- Table centerpieces and placemats
- Pot holders
And the list goes on. This tool truly encourages creativity and experimentation.
Finishing the Rug
After completing the stitching, I trimmed the excess yarn and removed the rug from the frame. Normally, a special tufting glue, like liquid latex, is used to seal the back and ensure durability. I didn’t have it, so I improvised with a hot glue gun for the edges and attached a piece of the included non-slip fabric. While not ideal, it worked for my first project and gave a nice finish.

Final Thoughts
I’m so proud of my first tufting creation. Even though it’s not perfect, it’s a beautiful, handmade piece that taught me so much. The Clawlab Tufting Gun is a fantastic tool for beginners and experienced crafters alike. I’ll definitely keep practicing and exploring all the creative possibilities it offers.
