Unlike sublimation and DTF, which require specific equipment and more expensive materials, transfer paper can work with any inkjet printer and works on fabrics of any color. In this tutorial, I’ll show you step by step two easy methods to apply custom labels to both light and dark fabrics. Join me and discover how easy it is to create brand labels with transfer paper!

  1. Print and cut out the labels with a guillotine or scissors.
  2. Design your labels in Canva or any design program. If you would like to learn how to design your own brand labels for clothing or t-shirts, I invite you to watch my written tutorial or Complete guide in turorial video on my YouTube channel.
  3. Open the design in the software of your choice. I like to use the free graphic design program Inkscape
  4. If you use transfer paper for light colors, reverse the image in mirror mode.
  5. If you use transfer paper for dark colors, print it normally.
  6. Adjust print settings:
    • Paper type: Matte photo paper
    • Quality: High
    • Size: Paper
  7. Select correct paper feeding depending on your printer
  8. Print and cut out the labels with a guillotine or scissors.

  1. Turn the shirt inside out.
  2. Place one heat proof pad within.
  3. Locate the label with the design towards the fabric.
  4. Place a sheet of parchment paper on.
  5. Press with:
    • Homemade iron at high temperature for 30 seconds.
    • mini heat press at 340°F for 30 seconds.
  6. Let cool before removing the paper and revealing the design.

The process for pressing transfer paper labels for dark colors is a little different than the process above.

  1. Remove the protective paper before pressing.
  2. Place the printed label with the design facing up.
  3. Cover with parchment paper to prevent other types of paper from adhering.
  4. Press with:
    • Homemade iron at high temperature for 30 seconds.
    • mini heat press at 340°F for 30 seconds.
  5. Remove the parchment paper and check the result.

  • On light fabrics: Both types of paper look good.
  • On dark fabrics: Transfer paper for dark colors is more visible.
  • Conclusion: Transfer paper labels for dark colors work on both types of fabric. The labels on  paper transfers for light colors only work on light fabrics.
